Entry floor plan templates

An entry does two jobs that fight each other: it is the circulation funnel from the front door into the house, and it is storage for everything people take off when they come in. The door swing is the constraint — it cannot sweep across the closet opening, and it cannot land someone in a wall. The templates here cover a foyer with a coat closet and a mudroom with bench, hooks and cubbies. Both are drawn with the door swing and the clear landing at the door as real zones, so the room can be stretched without the entry sequence quietly breaking.

The coat closet is drawn as a default rather than an option; buyers protect closet space more than almost any other feature.

The landing spot inside the front door: enough floor for the door to swing fully open with somebody standing clear of it, and a coat closet within reach. About 6 by 8 ft.

The sheet carries the fixture clearances as drawn geometry on their own layer, with the dimension strings and room notes outside the walls.

Codes cited on the sheet

  • unverified IRC 2021 R311.2 exit door required (unverified) — The required exit door shall provide for direct access from habitable portions of the dwelling to the exterior, and shall be side-hinged with a minimum clear width and height. The foyer has to leave that door usable, not merely present.
  • unverified IRC 2021 R311.3 floors and landings at exterior doors (unverified) — Landings at doors: a floor or landing on each side of an exterior door, not less than the door width and not less than 36 in in the direction of travel.
  • unverified IRC 2021 R311.6 hallway width 36 in minimum (unverified) — Hallways shall be not less than 36 in wide. Where the foyer narrows into a hall, that is the number it narrows to.
  • unverified IRC 2021 R314 smoke alarms (unverified) — Smoke alarms are required on each storey and in the vicinity of sleeping areas; the entry level carries one.
  • unverified typical practice — A 36 in door swings a 36 in arc, and a person needs about 18 in of standing room clear of it. Neither number is code; together they are what sets the foyer minimum.

"Verified" means the citation was checked against the source text we hold. "Unverified" means it has not been, and should be read as a pointer to look the section up rather than as a quotation of it.

The working entry: a bench to sit on, hooks above it, and enough floor in front to bend over and pull a boot off. About 6 by 8 ft, usually between the garage and the kitchen.

Codes cited on the sheet

  • verified IRC 2021 R305.1 — Ceiling height of not less than 7 feet in habitable spaces. A mudroom is service space rather than a habitable room, but the 7 ft figure is what it is built to in practice.
  • unverified IRC 2021 M1502 clothes dryer exhaust (unverified) — A clothes dryer located here shall exhaust to the outdoors, and the permitted duct length is what decides whether the laundry can live in this room.
  • unverified IRC 2021 R302.5.1 opening protection between garage and dwelling (unverified) — The door between an attached garage and the dwelling shall be a solid wood, solid or honeycomb core steel, or 20-minute fire-rated door, self-closing and self-latching, and shall not open into a sleeping room.
  • unverified IRC 2021 R311.6 hallway width 36 in minimum (unverified) — Hallways shall be not less than 36 in wide. Where the mudroom is a through-route rather than a room, that is the width it has to keep clear past the bench.
  • unverified typical practice — 36 in in front of the bench to sit down and reach a boot, and 30 in of through-route past it where the bench is on the traffic side.
