What SVG is good for

Vectors that anything can read

DWG is Autodesk’s binary CAD format and almost nothing outside CAD opens it. SVG is the vector format everything else already speaks — cutting software, vector editors, browsers. Converting bridges the two without flattening the drawing into pixels.

Laser cutters and vinyl plotters

LightBurn, Glowforge, Cricut Design Space and most vinyl cutters take SVG directly. A DWG they will not touch — an SVG of the same part loads and cuts.

Inkscape and Illustrator

SVG opens natively in both, with the geometry still as editable paths rather than a flattened image. Recolor it, restyle it, drop it in a layout.

Web pages and documentation

An SVG in a page stays crisp on every display at every zoom level, and it is a fraction of the weight of a PNG big enough to be readable.

Zooming into dense drawings

Is the SVG real vector output or just an embedded image?

It is real vector output. The drawing is plotted to SVG path and shape elements, not wrapped around a rasterised bitmap, so it scales to any size without pixelating and opens as editable paths in Inkscape, Illustrator, Affinity Designer and Figma.

Can I use the SVG for a laser cutter?

Yes — SVG is the format most laser and vinyl cutting software accepts, including LightBurn, Glowforge and Cricut Design Space. Import it, then confirm the scale in your cutting software before you burn anything: SVG carries units less rigidly than a CAD file does, so a quick dimension check against the original drawing is worth the ten seconds. If you want to cut on a CNC router instead, export GRBL G-code from the DXF rather than going through SVG.

What DWG versions can I convert to SVG?

DWG r11 through r2018, which covers essentially every drawing anyone is likely to send you — old archived vendor files included. DXF input is accepted too, in any version.

Is there a file size limit, and do I need an account?

What happens to my drawing after I convert it?

The conversion runs server-side, because reading the binary DWG format requires it. The uploaded file and its converted SVG are deleted immediately after the response is returned — they are transient artifacts and are never stored. If you only need to look at a DXF, the in-browser viewer parses it entirely on your own machine with no upload at all.

Why does a big drawing take longer to convert to SVG?

Converting to SVG is a plot: every entity in the drawing gets rendered. A small detail sheet is nearly instant, while a 60,000-entity facility plan takes up to about a minute. Converting to DXF instead is a format transcode rather than a plot, so it is much faster if a vector CAD file is all you actually need.

SVG or PDF — which should I pick?

Pick SVG when something downstream needs to read or edit the vectors: a laser cutter, a vector editor, a web page. Pick PDF when a person needs to read or print the drawing, because a PDF is a paginated sheet that opens the same way everywhere. Both come from the same converter, so it costs nothing to produce both.
