A PNG is the lowest-friction way to show someone a drawing. It needs no software, no plugin and no explanation — it renders inline in whatever the recipient is already using. That is its entire advantage, and it is a big one.
Word, Google Docs, Confluence and every ticketing system take a PNG without argument. Paste the plan into a scope of work or an RFI and the reader sees it immediately, with no attachment to open.
A PNG drops into PowerPoint or Keynote at a fixed size and stays put. Vector formats reflow and re-render unpredictably across machines; an image does not.
Field crews open images instantly. A DWG on a phone needs an app, an account and patience — a PNG in a text message needs none of that.
Cataloguing drawings, building an index, or showing a customer which sheet is which — a raster preview is the right tool and the only one every system displays inline.
Every other conversion here keeps geometry as geometry. PNG does not — it flattens the drawing into a grid of coloured dots at a fixed resolution. The drawing is rendered at 150 DPI, which is the sweet spot for a document image: sharp enough to read dimension text on screen and when printed at normal size, without producing an enormous file from a dense plan. If you need something that stays crisp at any magnification, convert to SVG or PDF instead, since those are vector and have no fixed resolution at all.
PDF if the drawing will be printed, measured, or handed to a plan reviewer — it is vector, it holds true lineweights, and it prints at full fidelity on any paper size. PNG if the drawing is going to be looked at on a screen inside something else: a report, an email, a slide, a work order, a chat message. The rule of thumb is that PDF is a deliverable and PNG is an illustration.
No, and that is worth being clear about. PNG is pixels — once converted, the geometry is gone and no CAD program can recover the lines as editable entities. If you or the recipient needs to change the drawing, convert to DXF instead, which stays fully editable and opens in every CAD package.
Rendering to an image draws every entity in the drawing rather than transcoding a file structure, so time scales with drawing complexity rather than file size. A detail sheet is nearly instant; a 60,000-entity facility plan takes on the order of a minute. Converting DWG to DXF is far quicker because it is a format transcode with no rendering involved.
Reading binary DWG has to happen server-side, so the file is uploaded. It and the PNG it produced are deleted immediately after the response is returned — nothing is retained or stored. If you only want to look at a DXF rather than convert it, the browser viewer parses it on your own machine with no upload whatsoever.
