Fire Sprinkler (MEP) CAD blocks

Single-line fire sprinkler piping and the heads it feeds - pendant, upright and sidewall - with elbows, tees, crosses, caps, reducers, risers and straight runs in every orientation. Single-line is how sprinkler pipe is drawn on a plan, and that is what these are.

Drafting with fire sprinkler (mep) blocks

Fire sprinkler layouts are drawn single-line, with heads as small symbols at their true locations and pipe as a line with fitting marks. This category is that toolkit: pendant, upright and sidewall heads, a riser, and fittings (45 and 90 degree elbows, tees, caps, a cross, reducers and straight runs) in every orientation, 25 blocks in all. A fire protection designer or engineer lays them out on the sprinkler plan, usually over the reflected ceiling plan, on NCS fire protection layers such as F-SPRN, though many offices use FP-SPRK for heads and FP-PIPE for pipe.

Head spacing comes from NFPA 13, not from the symbol. For standard-spray heads in a light hazard occupancy with a hydraulically calculated system, each head may protect up to 225 square feet with no more than 15 ft between heads, and heads generally stay at least 6 ft apart so one does not wet the next. Distance from a wall can be no more than half the allowable spacing and at least 4 in. The head blocks are 9 in circles for pendant and upright, so they read at 1/8 in scale; the sidewall head is a half symbol at the wall line that throws toward +Y.

The fittings share a 12 in leg length. Elbows insert at the bend vertex, tees at the run center, reducers at their large end and caps at the open end. Lay the branch lines on the ceiling grid first, then insert fittings at the vertices, and the straight runs close the gaps. The riser inserts at its center on the pipe and marks where the vertical feed enters the floor.

Choosing heads: pendants hang below a finished ceiling, uprights point up where pipe is exposed, and sidewall heads mount on the wall where running a branch across the ceiling is impractical, such as along the entry wall of a hotel room. Center pendants in ceiling tiles when the RCP allows, and coordinate their locations with lights and diffusers so none sit in a head's spray pattern.

Fire Sprinkler (MEP) CAD blocks: questions

How far apart are sprinkler heads in a light hazard occupancy?

Under NFPA 13, standard-spray heads in light hazard with a hydraulically calculated system may cover up to 225 square feet each, spaced no more than 15 ft apart and generally no closer than 6 ft. A head may be no farther from a wall than half the allowed spacing and no closer than 4 in.

What is the difference between pendant, upright and sidewall sprinkler heads?

A pendant hangs down from pipe above a finished ceiling; an upright points up from exposed pipe; a sidewall mounts on the wall and throws its pattern across the room. The pendant and upright blocks are 9 in circles inserting at the head center; the sidewall inserts on the wall line and throws toward +Y.

Is sprinkler pipe drawn single-line or double-line?

Single-line on plan. Pipe runs are drawn as lines with fitting symbols at elbows, tees and reducers, and pipe size is shown by tag. The fitting blocks here are single-line with a 12 in leg, and come in every orientation so each turn and branch direction is its own named block.
